Is Kybella Permanent? How Long Do Results Actually Last

Is Kybella permanent? Yes, and the reason comes down to how it actually works. Kybella doesn’t shrink fat cells the way diet or exercise does. It destroys them. Once those specific cells are gone, they can’t come back, and they can’t store fat again, which is why the results are considered permanent rather than something that fades over time. That said, getting to a permanent result involves a process worth understanding before you book, not just after.

Reviewed for medical accuracy. Kybella + PCDC protocols at Aspen Aesthetics + Wellness are reviewed and supported by Kelly McKay, MSN, APRN, CRNA, Owner and Clinical Director.

Why Kybella Results Are Considered Permanent

Kybella’s active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a molecule your body already produces to help break down dietary fat. Injected into the fat beneath the chin, it breaks down the membrane of the fat cells in the treated area. Over the following weeks, the body clears those cells away as part of its normal healing process. Because the cells themselves are gone, not just smaller, they’re no longer available to store fat again. That’s the mechanical reason the result holds, and it’s also what separates Kybella from non-invasive body contouring that mainly shrinks fat volume rather than eliminating cells outright.

What Could Still Change Your Results

Permanent doesn’t mean untouchable by everything. Significant weight gain after treatment can still cause fullness to develop under the chin, not because the treated cells came back, but because the fat cells that remain elsewhere in the body, including any untreated cells nearby, can still expand. That’s a distinction worth sitting with: Kybella removes specific cells, it doesn’t change your body’s overall relationship with fat storage.

Skin laxity is a separate issue too. Aging and skin quality aren’t addressed by Kybella on their own, so someone with noticeable loose skin alongside submental fullness may want to talk through complementary options at consultation rather than expecting Kybella alone to solve both. This is exactly the kind of thing that’s easy to gloss over on a pricing page and worth actually asking about before you commit to a treatment plan.

How Long It Takes to Get There

Most people need more than one session, typically somewhere between two and six, spaced about a month apart. That’s not a sign the first treatment didn’t work. It reflects how the fat cells clear gradually rather than all at once, and how much submental fullness there was to begin with. Final results are usually assessed around eight to twelve weeks after the last session, once swelling has fully resolved and the body has finished processing the treated cells.

Patience matters here more than with most injectables. Filler shows change the same day. Kybella asks you to trust a process that looks worse before it looks better, which is exactly why knowing the timeline up front matters more than it would for something with instant results.

What to Expect Along the Way

Getting to a permanent result means going through a temporary recovery process first, and it’s worth knowing what that actually looks like rather than being surprised by it.

Swelling and Bruising

This is the most noticeable part of recovery, and it’s expected, not a complication. Swelling typically peaks within the first few days and can take one to two weeks to fully settle, sometimes longer after the first session than after later ones.

Numbness and Firmness

Temporary numbness and small areas of firmness under the skin are common as the treated cells break down and clear. Both usually soften and resolve over the following weeks without any intervention needed.

Rare but Serious Risks

Less common but worth naming plainly: temporary nerve effects that can cause an uneven smile, difficulty swallowing, or skin irritation at the injection site. These are uncommon in the clinical literature, and a thorough health history review before treatment is part of how a provider screens for who shouldn’t have it.

What the Research Shows

In Kybella’s clinical trials, patients reported higher satisfaction meaningfully with their chin and facial appearance compared to those who received a placebo, and that improvement held at the twelve-week follow-up. A 2020 review of adverse events found that the most commonly reported side effects, injection site pain, numbness, swelling, and bruising, were transient and mild to moderate for most patients. Worth knowing too: a 2023 meta-analysis of the available randomized trials found deoxycholic acid effective for submental fat reduction, but flagged that all the eligible trials showed potential industry sponsorship bias, a detail that’s easy for marketing pages to leave out. The honest read is that the treatment works well for the right candidate, with real, well-documented recovery in between.

Why a Medical, CRNA-Led Setting Matters

A health history review before treatment is what catches who isn’t a good candidate, whether that’s an active infection at the injection site or another condition worth flagging first. Technique matters for comfort and for minimizing the swelling that follows. At Aspen, Kybella protocols are reviewed under Kelly McKay’s oversight as Clinical Director, and your provider will walk you through what to expect for your specific case rather than a generic timeline.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

Review from Google
Very thorough first visit for a veteran Xeomin user. I really liked my aesthetician. She was attentive, listed to all my concerns and used 1/3 of the units I was planning on buying. I was extremely pleased and will go back. All the women who work there use the products and look good.
They were very busy, and their clientele was across the board which I like. People were buying their off the shelf products like crazy. Want to ask about that in my follow up.
More like a doctor’s office which I like feels more professional than a lot of other places. I like this place they seem inclusive and genuinely interested in you and are nice from the second you walk in. Love that.

Aspen Aesthetics is the definition of professionalism, intentional & honest care, the best of the BEST employees, and my very favorite front door to open! I underwent a Mohs procedure on my face and was left with an awful scar. Through the guidance of the trusted individuals at Aspen, multiple treatments, and leaning on education from each of them - my scar is night and day in comparison. I continue to frequent Aspen and take advantage of all they have to offer! Each and every one of the Aspen team members are simply the kindest people you’ll ever interact with. Aspen is to be trusted and valued in our COS community!
