Medical grade chemical peels are a type of skin resurfacing treatment, which are extremely effective for improving skin imperfections. A chemical peel starts with a one-on-one consultation with one of our advanced medical aestheticians. The exfoliation process occurs when a solution is applied to the skin to generate a response for the skin to begin the rejuvenation process. In the days that follow, dead skin will shed, showing a rejuvenated layer of skin below and giving you a fresh hydrated glow. Medical grade chemical peels can provide significant improvement without the downtime of other types of resurfacing treatments. Every client receives a in depth analysis with a customized recommendation for medical grade skincare.
Chemical peels are broadly defined by how deep they can penetrate into the different layers of the skin. There are many different ingredients used in chemical peels, including alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and phenol. The depth of the peel is determined by the type and concentration of the ingredients in the peeling solution, the manner they are applied and how long they are left on the skin.
Medium to deep peels may reach a deeper layer of the skin, stimulate collagen regeneration as well as produce significant exfoliation that will be visible in the form of shedding and/or peeling. This is because it is a stronger and more exfoliating treatment to penetrate a deeper layer of the skin. These peels can address deeper skin concerns, like brown pigment and melasma, which live deeper in the dermis.
Making the decision regarding peel depth should will be made during a consultation with our experienced medical esthetician and will be customized based on your personal comfort level, social downtime preferences, and overall goals within your treatment plan. We offer both custom peels, as well as designer peels.
Our designer peels include:
TCA Peels such as ZO 3-Step Peel® as well as the VI® Peel: Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is the most common ingredient found in medium depth chemical peels and is a key ingredient in both the VI® and ZO 3-Step Peel®. Benefits of these treatments include reduction in: sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scarring. Peels which include TCA offer effective results with minimum risk. Both are safe and effective for all skin types and have been demonstrated to have some of the most effective and long-lasting results in the industry
Because all our chemical peels are customized the day of treatment, all skin conditions can benefit. If you have multiple conditions or concerns, different protocols can be blended and modified to treat multiple problems at one time. Problems our custom peels address include:
Hyperpigmentation: All brands of chemical peels used at our spa treat hyperpigmentation. For best results, your skin should be pre-treated with our ZO® Skinhealth hyperpigmentation protocol for 4-6 weeks prior to your peel.
Melasma: Our expert medical esthetician will use chemical peels in addition to other safe skin devices to lighten pigment disorders such as melasma.
Enlarged or visible pores: Chemical peels are fantastic for enlarged, visible, or congested pores. It’s a great way to purge the built up oils and dead skin. Pores will need excellent skin care with ZO® Skinhealth if you would like to maintain results.
Acne and Acne Scarring: Since chemical peels deeply exfoliate the skin, reduce bacteria contributing to breakouts, as well as mitigate inflammation, they are an excellent treatment for acne breakouts. Acne scarring responds very well to chemical remodeling, especially when used with other scar rejuvenation techniques such as microneedling. TCA CROSS is the Chemical Reconstruction of Skin Scars (CROSS), using Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA). It is used to elevate and remodel depressed scars and is usually used together with other scar treatments, including subcision, IPL, lasers and radiofrequency. Common causes of these scars are acne and chickenpox.
Mature Skin: Our custom chemical peels target deep wrinkles and fine lines. This treatment diminishes age spots and sun damage, improves skin texture and elasticity and stimulates collagen production for long-lasting results.
Redness and inflammation: Chemical peels for rosacea are an integral component of our treatment combinations for this difficult condition. Exfoliating the outer layer of the skin with a superficial peel effectively and efficiently preps inflamed skin for deeper treatments and aids in strengthening the skin barrier, an essential regenerative aspect of rosacea management.
A chemical peel starts in our office, where one of our medical aestheticians will apply the solution. This will soak into the top layer of your skin over the course of several hours. As the peel is applied you may feel some warmth and a brief burning sensation. It is very tolerable and a cold air blower or hand held fan feels very soothing. Depending on the peel depth received, you can expect a range of visible skin shedding, from none, to minimal flaking, to very visible skin shedding. Depending on the depth of peel received, your skin can range from flaky to sheet peeling 2-3 days after treatment and you may peel up to 7 days. As the dead skin sheds, a rejuvenated layer of skin below will start to show giving you a fresh hydrated glow. Some clients + members need more than one treatment to achieve desired results.
The side effects from a chemical peel are minimal. Your skin might feel dry and sensitive for a few days. Age spots and pigment can appear darker for several weeks. And breakouts might get worse before they get better. Possible side effects include and are not limited to: slight or extreme redness, histamine reaction, swelling, stinging, itchy, tender, dry or flaking skin.
Chemical peels that contain TCA or salicylic acid are not recommended while pregnant. Medical grade chemical peels can provide significant improvement without the downtime of other types of resurfacing treatments. We keep in touch and check in with you to see if you need any assistance with these side effects as your skin heals.
